Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: It’s Rarely Simple

Presenter: Christine Novak
Attendance Limit: 150 delegates
Outline:

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common upper extremity nerve compression. Patients may present with CTS in isolation or in combination with other neuromuscular pathologies which complicate the management. This workshop will review the assessment and management of carpal tunnel syndrome, the pathophysiology of chronic nerve compression, and management of multi-level nerve compression.

Anatomy and Neurology of the Forearm Including Compressive Neuropathies

Presenter: Tony Pohl
Attendance Limit: 130 delegates
Outline:

Dr Tony Pohl brings an entertaining and novel way of learning anatomy. He has a passion for teaching so this workshop will be interactive and practical. Dr Pohl will cover muscle and nerve examination / testing, detailed anatomy of the flexor and extensor aspect of the forearm. Walk away with a clearer clinical method for assessing motor weakness and the relationship this has with particular nerve compression sites. Participants will be provided with a useful resource and handout. So be prepared to roll up your sleeves, buddy-up and learn about anatomy in a whole new way

Clinical Decision Making to Support UL Orthotic Intervention for Neurologically-Based Impairment

Constructing a Brachial Plexus Model - Know from Whence You Came

Presenter: Ray Jongs
Attendance Limit: 30 delegates
Outline:

This is a practical session where each pair of registrants will be making a Brachial Plexus Model out of thermoplastic material!

The workshop will also provide an understanding of the nerve innervation of the upper limb, how to assess for proximal nerve lesions, and the implication for diagnosis and management.

Painful Hand and Upper Limb Conditions - Taking a Trip from the Peripheral Neurone to the Majesty of the Brain

Presenter: Tim Cocks
Attendance Limit: 110 delegates
Outline:

Painful hand and upper limb states, with a multitude of potential and overlapping diagnoses, intricate anatomy and physiology, and the potential for small impairments to have significant functional impact, present complex conditions for therapists. But pain does not arise in the hand or upper limb; pain is a complex phenomenon involving the whole human being, including their body, brain and societal context.

This session will cover pain mechanisms related to the upper limb including danger signals arising from ‘issues in the tissues’, peripheral neuropathic pain, nociceptive processing throughout the nervous system and the importance of a neuroimmune understanding. Taking a trip up the afferent neurone to the majesty of the brain, this session will also introduce cord and brain neuroimmunology, and pain treatment strategies incorporating evidence-based educational interventions and upper limb neurodynamics.

Friday 4.00 - 5.30pm

Therapists' Management of Nerve Transfers

Presenter: Melanie McCulloch
Attendance Limit: 150 delegates
Outline:

This interactive workshop will give participants an understanding of nerve transfer treatment techniques you can use with:

  • Triceps N. transfer to Axillary N.
  • Accessory N. transfer to SSN,
  • Median / Ulnar N. transfer to Biceps / Brachialis N.

It will allow for hands on practice of the techniques that Mel uses with her nerve transfer clients.

POP Casting

Presenter: Jennifer Kaess
Attendance Limit: 30 delegates
Outline:

The AHTA Conference Committee is excited to offer an entry level workshop for all those who have wondered about plaster of Paris, but never had a chance to use it.  Jennifer Kaess OT, MAHTA, CHT, will be presenting a workshop which will allow all participants to experience casting the hand using plaster of Paris.

This interactive session will include getting plastered, hands on practice and you will leave confident that this is a tool you could utilise in your everyday practice.

Jen has been in Hand Therapy for over 25 years, and freely espouses despite all the advances in materials and techniques she has seen over the decades, that serial casting with plaster, is often the best, most cost effective, well tolerated and most efficient treatment technique for PIP flexion contractures.    Plaster is also a wonderful medium for Casting Motion to Mobilize Stiffness (CMMS).

Jen can’t wait to get plastered with you!
